Abu Ghosh
The first church was built during that time. In the Crusader period (about 1,000 years ago), the village was identified with Emmaus, where Jesus first appeared following his resurrection, and a Benedictine monastery was built in the area – a very beautiful building that is well worth a visit. The monastery is surrounded by a well-kept garden, which includes ancient trees. Stunning frescoes can be found on its interior walls and a spring flows in the crypt at the base of the monastery. At the highest point in Abu Ghosh, facing the Judean Mountains, is the Our Lady of the Ark of the Covenant Church, which was built in 1924 on the remains of an ancient Byzantine church. Its courtyard contains a large statue of Mary.
The current village was founded during the Ottoman period by the Abu Ghosh family, whose descendants make up most of the local population. In addition to the famous hummus and skewers, Abu Ghosh has various shops selling glassware and candles, as well as tasty baklava, knafeh, and other treats. Don’t miss Abu Daoud’s shop and its maamoul cookies, which are no less than divine!
